THE ‘MERCAT DE LA TERRA’ (Farmers Market) IN XALÓ, NOW EVERY SATURDAY OF THE MONTH
Gastronomy, tourism and local business will be featured every week. The Mercat de la Terra will take place in conjunction with the “Rastro”, the famous antigue market in the area of the Xopà I Pla de la Séquia. The city council is rehabilitating an area at the entrance of the town that will host the market on Saturdays. For the rest of the week, it will be used to increase the current number of parking spaces.
Xaló launches a new touristic highlight featuring gastronomy and local traders every Saturday, changing how frequently the Mercat de la Terra is held. Every Saturday from October to May, from 8.30 am until 2.30pm there will be a new edition of the Mercat de la Terra, with traders offering local products and crafts. In addition, there will be scheduled activities running together with the traditional antiques market.
The activities of the market will have a different theme every Saturday: the first Saturday, will have a childrens programme in the Plaza Mayor; the second Saturday will feature guided tours leaving from the Ethnology Museum (prior reservation is required); the third Saturday will feature musical performances in the Plaza Mayor; and the last Saturday of the month will include food or drink tasting or a gastronomy workshop in the Ethnology Museum.
What’s more, the new market location will be set up to form a tourist corridor from the entrance of the village to the antiques market, tourist information office, ethnology museum and the Mercat de la Terra, running along Juan Carlos I Avenue to the Plaza Mayor, where many of the market activities will be held.
The new market site will also increase public parking spaces in the village for the rest of the week. This site is located at the entrance of the village and is surrounded by shops that generate a lot of activity during the week. It was therefore necessary to carry out the project with the aim of decongesting traffic and facilitating parking.
